SCB 17: Filming a Music Video

Posted on 04/20/10, in Personal Projects, Video Blog, by jonathanpalfrey.co.uk

Last monday I produced a music video for Jess Brown. We filmed it at South Devon College and I’ve spent the last week editing it. The video is actually part of my end of year project where we have to produce a video that will help expand our skills and knowledge. I chose to do a music video because I had never made one before, thus allowing me to learn some new techniques do try things I hadn’t done before.

Another area of filming making I’ve got interested in over the past few months after watching people such as Philip Bloom is creating timelapses. In a previous blog I showed you how I was creating some of the timelapses which I was making for this music video. I’ve discovered over the past few months that creating timelaspse takes a while to do, especially night time ones, often up to 2 hours. Also processing all the large photos into editable videos takes some effort. Each of my timelapses had roughfully 1000 photos and my main aim was to make them last upto 10 seconds.

In the end I didn’t actually use much of the timelapses in the final music video. I was really proud of them and would have liked to use them more but I decided that the video had better pace if I only used brief flashes of them.

So with the timelaspes complete it was time to film the Jess preforming the song. I wanted a dark background and using three big lights. To achieve this I hired out South Devon Colleges theatre which was big enough and worked perfectly for what I wanted to do. The flat floor was also handy for the dolly to travel smoothly over.

Only had a few issues collecting equipment from the college on the day, luckily one of the techs were there to give me a key to gain access to the lights and dolly. I mostly used my own equipment which included a Sony Z5 HDV camcorder, Libec LS38 Tripod along with my laptop and speakers. We also borrowed a projector off the college for the timelapse shots over Jess which turned out really well on camera.

Anyway enough writing for one day, please check out the video blog of the day below and of course the final product, Jess Brown’s ‘Wishbone’ music video. Please feel free to comment.
